Stress and anxiety are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation — but they are clinically distinct, and the difference changes how you should respond to them.

What is stress? Stress is a response to an external trigger. An upcoming exam, a difficult conversation with a family member, financial pressure — these are all stressors. Stress typically resolves when the situation resolves.
What is anxiety? Anxiety is a response to an internal, often non-specific threat. The worry feels persistent and disproportionate. Even when the external stressor is removed, the anxiety remains. It can feel like a background hum of dread that you cannot switch off.
Key differences: - Stress has a clear cause. Anxiety often does not. - Stress is usually temporary. Anxiety can be chronic. - Stress motivates action. Anxiety can paralyse. - Stress improves when the situation changes. Anxiety may not.
When is it a disorder? Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is diagnosed when excessive worry occurs on more days than not for at least six months, accompanied by physical symptoms like restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, or sleep disturbance.
What to do? Both stress and anxiety respond well to targeted interventions. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is highly effective for anxiety disorders. Medication can also play a role when symptoms are severe.
If you are unsure whether what you are experiencing is stress or anxiety — a single session with a psychiatrist can bring enormous clarity.
